2016 is shaping up to be another great year for Android. There’s plenty to become excited about in the upcoming year, including many new flagships and some newer versions of your returning favorites as well. These devices are going to rock the technological world with their uniqueness, awesome quality and impressive features. The market competition has led to more and more companies trying their level best to become the market leader this year, which is the sole reason that we come across novel inventions every day from various brands. Listed below are the handsets that are expected to be flagship and the best smartphones of 2016.
Samsung Galaxy S7
The release of Samsung’s flagship Android phone every year is a big deal, and it wouldn’t be an exception this year also. After the well received and much appreciated Galaxy S6, many are just hoping that the company would bring back some features that had been dropped off the device. Also this time around, there will be some new interesting quirks.
According to recent reports, Galaxy 7 would sport a 5.1 inched super AMOLED screen at 2560*1440 pixels. There will be a different curved edge variant device though, that will come with a 5.5 inched curved AMOLED screen at same pixel values. The battery would still be non-removable and Samsung reportedly would bump the smartphone’s capacity to 3000mAh and 3300mAh for the edge variant. Samsung may even bring microSD slot, but most likely in the non-edge model. The rear camera may back off from 16 MP to 12 MP, but it is rumored to have better performance in low light conditions.
Apple iPhone SE
Apple had confirmed the latest iPhone SE in one of its special events on 21st March and the phone then went up for sale at 359 pounds (16 GB) on 31st March. Most of the rumors raised about it turned out to be true. While the iPhone SE has almost similar looks as that of 5s, it has matt chamfered edges and the shiny steel Apple logo on the very inside will remind you of 6s. Headline features for iPhone SE include Apple A9 processor along with M9 motion co-processor and a 12 megapixel iSight camera capable of capturing 4K videos. With the new addition of 802,11ac Wi-Fi, the device is capable of supporting downloading speeds of up to 433 Mbps. Improvements have also been made to battery life, with the latest device beating 5s’ runtime for video, audios, 3G talk time, WiFi and LTE browsing.
iPhone SE is now available to be bought directly from Apple. But since it turned out to be really popular, the handsets are getting sold out from many stores. Initially the device is set to roll out in Australia, France, China, Canada, Hon Kong, Germany, Japan, Puerto Rico, the UK, the US and New Zealand, but the end of May, it would be available in 110 countries. Apple iPhone SE is available in silver, gold, rose gold and space grey colors.
LG G flex 3
After LG G5 was launched in MWC 2016, we will now be witnessing the next major game changer and successor to LG flex 2, mostly known for its bended u shaped body. The smartphone would most likely be released in September 2016 IFA Berlin. It would be equipped with another upgraded processor Snapdragon 830, 820 being used these days in almost all major flagship devices.
Talking of its highlighted specifications, the device will come with an amazing 20.7 megapixel rear camera that can record 4K videos and an 8 megapixel front camera to click great selfies and video calling. LG G flex 3 will be powered with 6GB RAM, since the 4GB ones are now getting older with time. It will be fueled with a bigger 3500 mAh battery that will allow for more backup. With 128 GB storage option and a fingerprint scanner, there’s definitely a lot more that you can expect from this upcoming smartphone.
HTC One M10
Although HTC’s 2016 plans for upcoming smartphone releases have less leaky as compared to LG’s and Samsung’s, there have been a few less reliable reports. What has been known so far is that the arriving HTC flagship will again flaunt HTC’s unibody metal design; however it would be closer in shape with the recently released handset A9. There will be a fingerprint sensor on the back and a camera that probably wouldn’t suck big this time.
The smartphone is expected to be powered by a Snapdragon 820 Soc and come with a 1440 pixels LCD. Last year, the Snapdragon 810 was said to drag the M9 more heavily with severe heating issues. In order to make up for last year model’s mediocre battery life, HTC has been planning on a non-removable 3500mAh battery. The device is expected to be released in the spring along with Samsung and LG flagships. It may the final shot from HTC to devise a high end phone that people will want to buy.
Sony Xperia Z6
In the Xperia Z series, Sony is now approaching its sixth device and like the HTC One M10, this could as well be a make or break smartphone. All the Z devices are based on Sony’s OmniBalance principle: dust proof, aluminum, water resistant and a glass body. Between each generation, the devices have changed really little, but this time it may be a refresher. Its released date was expected to be in and around February.
A host of Z6 specifications leaked list the handset to be having a 5.2 inches IPS display and WQHD resolution. A 1080 pixel display seems more probable, although many people believe that high resolution smartphones really do have an increasingly essential role to play. Also the device would be running the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system and will hold Snapdragon 820 processor, microSDXC support and 4GB RAM. It would also be listed with one 23 MP rear camera featuring f2.0 aperture and a 5 megapixel front facing camera.
Project Ara wouldn’t be producing a flagship phone, but instead it would allow creating a flagship by yourself, according to your own customized specifications. Google inherited the Ara Modular smartphone when it had taken over ATAP group of Motorola before it sold the rest of the company to Lenovo. Google has been talking of Ara becoming one real product since the early 2015 and it most certainly is set to make its appearance now.
The core of Ara would feature a screen attached with a frame that would accommodate variety of hardware modules for storage, RAM, cameras, batteries and more, all interchangeable and can be swapped out the device easily and upgraded. Also you could attach wacky niche stuff such as projectors. You can build the phone that you want and keep upgrading it as new modules are released. Also in order to make it work, Google will be developing a special Android 5.0 branch that would support hot swapping of most of the components. Project Ara would be available in various sizes, even including really small form factors which would cost as low as $15. This definitely could be the next big thing in smartphone market.
Xiaomi Mi 6
People expect a lot from Xiaomi smartphones. The brand is famous for its budget friendly, cheap and high end smartphones and we have seen a lot of them till now. People are expecting something more unique from the upcoming series, and Xiaomi is set to make a flagship killer till time by doing something out of the world with device. If we assume some of the Mi 6 specifications, the device would be featuring 256 GB internal storage, and a Snapdragon 830 processor to make the smartphone one of the best of its kind in 2016. With a 4200 mAh battery, Mi 6 will keep running for a long time before it drains out completely.
iPhone 7 plus
It is said that the Apple’s upcoming smartphone iPhone 7 Plus would be the best till date, with numerous spec improvements that include a jump to the A10 chip along with M10 motion co-processor and 2 GB RAM. It is being suggested the screen size of iPhone 7 Plus may be increased to 5.7 inches, but not by increasing the size of the phone. Now this could be achieved by incorporating an edge to edge screen or a sidewall display. We can hope that it enhances the resolution as well.
Big things are expected from the upcoming device including wireless charging and possibility of dual-cameras. After the Apple event on 21st March 2016, its clear that both iPone 7 and 7 Plus would be arriving in September 2016. For the past two releases of iPhones, the prices had been the same and so it’s expected that iPhone 7 plus would be priced at 619 pounds for 16 GB model, 699 pounds for 64 GB model and 789 pounds for 128 GB model. Also rumors regarding a SanDisk NAND flash chip of 256 GB are being aired which means that Apple would bring in more storage for less cost.

Microsoft Surface Phone
With this flagship device, Microsoft is now looking for another huge game changer after the successful launch of Nokia Lumia 950 and 950xl. Some mind blowing specifications are said to arrive with this smartphone. Of everything that we know of Nokia is that it makes high quality smartphones which last for many years together. But after its takeover by Microsoft, the combination of Microsoft’s software and Nokia’s hardware have bought in some really amazing devices that we saw in Lumia series.
So talking of Microsoft Surface Phone, the upcoming smartphones would be boosted by Intel processor, which is a lot more powerful than any of the Snapdragon one available in market. Intel processor would help Surface Phone to run 32 but Windows stuff. Also the device will sport a Quad HD screen and a ClearBlack Gorilla Glass 4 for screen protection. Its most amazing part is the camera. We will see a 21 megapixel pure view camera that will come with Zeiss 6 lens and on the front part, an 8 MP Zeiss wide angle less for superb quality and wider selfies.
